Smart Heads to Fun Fun Fun Fest

If you want to be cool, you should do cool things. That’s why smart is on a music kick.

By all accounts, Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest is an event filled with underground and indie bands that are probably too cool to use the term “cool.” The festival, which takes place from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6, is dedicated to booking music from the underground scene. It ignores the hype and focuses on artists that simply sound great, no matter what style of music they play. Spanning punk, indie rock, hip-hop and electronic music, Fun Fun Fun provides a chance for fans to get up close and personal with new performers before everybody else knows their names. This year’s performers include Spoon, Passion Pit, Lykke Li, Slayer, Public Enemy, Major Lazer, Odd Future, Henry Rollins and Reggie Watts.

Well, smart -- you know, that small, quirky car that made a big splash and then faded --wants in on the vibe. It would like to make a comeback among just the sort of people who will attend Fun Fun Fun: young, hip and knowledgeable about new music.

“Smart is a car designed for people who are a little bit unconventional, ahead of the curve, and are looking for something innovative and different to meet their transportation needs,” says Tracey Matura, general manager of smart. “That’s exactly what Fun Fun Fun does in the world of music. It’s relaxed yet forward-thinking. And, of course, it’s an absolute blast to be a part of.”

The rejuvenated smart is going hot and heavy into the music and cultural scene. The Mercedes-Benz–owned car brand has also supported programs that showcase innovators in fashion and eclectic arts, including Gen Art and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. It also sponsored author Neil Chambers’ Urban Green book tour.
